Requirements


Volunteers should be English speaking, above 18 years of age, be open minded, flexible, creative and culturally sensitive. 

Certain projects require volunteers to possess necessary skills that are relevant to the volunteering project. Eg: Projects that involves health care requires volunteers to have prior medical experience or background, projects that involves teaching English requires volunteers to have a good command of the English language, etc. Please click on individual projects for more details.

 

Orientation


There will be an orientation for all volunteers that will last from 1-7 days, dependent on selected project and length of stay. The orientation will cover details about the host organization, Nepali language and culture, health talk, specific program induction. It also covers a one day sight seeing around Kathmandu. Volunteers will stay at a guesthouse during the orientation period.

 

Food and Accomodation


Your living accommodation during the duration of your volunteer placement is arranged by VIN, and is included within your volunteer program fee. During your volunteer induction / training, you will stay in a guest house in Kathmandu, and thereafter you will be placed in accommodation either in the community (with a host family); at an orphanage or at a Monastery or Nunnery depending on your selected volunteer program. Two main meals would be provided per day.

For volunteers who arrive earlier or who want to stay longer, it is not possible for VIN to arrange and provide accommodation, but we will help volunteers to find a reputable, inexpensive place to stay. Please be prepared that your accommodation will be of a Nepali standard, and will not have the same facilities and utilities as you may be used to, such as a western style toilet or a hot shower. Although your accommodation will be basic, it will be clean.

 

Project Information


Child Care: Early childhood Development

VIN’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers are set up in rural communities for children of 3 to 5 years of age. These centers work to surround children who belong to marginalized communities, with a friendly learning environment. You as a volunteer may offer your care and support for these children by having VIN place you in one of these ECDs. >>
 

Child Care: Orphange Homes

VIN has been working in collaboration with various orphanages in Nepal to set up Child Care Orphanage Volunteers program. Every year hundreds of orphaned children wonder the streets of Kathmandu. A majority of them become child laborers and never get time to actually enjoy childhood. VIN aims to give them their childhood. If you were to become a volunteer, you could be placed into one of the orphanages VIN works with, giving the children the care and support they never received. >>
 

Children's Club Facilitation

VIN’s children’s clubs are extracurricular programs set up for youth of all ages. This is a platform provided to the children that aims to develop their innate skills, develop their creativity, increase their awareness of community issues such as health and the environment, as well as help them apply what they have learnt in the classroom to real life situations. >>
 

Community Health and Medical Care

Status: OPEN FOR APPLICATION

*Prior medical background required. Medical / public health background either currently studying or practicing in the medical field. doctors, nurses, medical students, and nursing students. keen to work in rural community with basic facilities
 
VIN’s Community Health and Medical Care volunteer program was first set up in mind of the healthcare situation in Nepal and its many inadequacies. VIN aims to begin with one specific community and then continue to work with others, one by one. Its first goal is to improve the basic health care conditions in Jitpur Phedi, a rural village. VIN has already set up health posts in Jitpur as well as health camps. >>
 

Computer Technology Volunteer

Status: OPEN FOR APPLICATION

VIN puts together the computer technology volunteer program, in recognition of information technology as a fast-moving, efficient means of communication. If the locals learn some basic IT skills, then they will be much better connected with the rest of the country and even the world. VIN aims to raise awareness of social, political, and health issues among the village people in order to ensure they are progressing properly.
 

Construction and Manual Work

Status: OPEN FOR APPLICATION

Duration: Volunteers are required to commit for a minimum of one week
 
VIN’s construction and manual work volunteer program mainly aims towards building basic infrastructure for the people in rural areas of Nepal. A majority of the homes that VIN works with do not have proper toilets and the communities at large do not have access to facilities such as libraries or classrooms. VIN looks to provide them with these basic facilities. >>
 

Environment and Agroforestery

Status: OPEN FOR APPLICATION

VIN’s environment and agroforestry volunteer program is one that revolves around giving awareness to the local people on the condition of the environment, or placing volunteers into an agroforestry project set up by a German organization called “Kaule-ev” based in Kaule. VIN believes that the current state of the environment directly impacts one’s way of life and general well-being. Therefore, the current environment’s well-being is the people’s well-being. >>
 

Environment - Water Project Research: Allocation and Conflict

Status: OPEN FOR APPLICATION

Duration: Volunteers are required to commit for a minimum of 3 months
 
*Volunteers are required to have a degree or relevant experience in water and sanitation, or associated disciplines (Hydraulics, Hydrology, Water Management, Civil Engineering, Public Health).
 
Main activities: Interview local people, companies, organizations, documentations and much more.
VIN’s environment water project volunteer program is a program that centers on the allocation of water within Nepal. VIN aims to designate volunteers the job of investigating and analyzing the system. According to former volunteers, this program is one the best ways to uncover the truth about Nepal’s water situation, shedding light on Nepal’s depleting water table and other inside matters. VIN believes that this particular volunteer opportunity is suited for those who thrive in and learn from investigative research. >>
 

Fund raising and Grant Writing

Main activities: Grant writing and fundraising by writing project proposals based on real situations in the working sites to fund its uprunning projects. You can also help VIN develop projects for its future working community sites.
VIN’s fundraising and grant writing volunteer program focuses primarily on capturing resources for the continual support of its different programs. You as a volunteer would be engaging in the writing of comprehensive proposals that will be sent to numerous organizations, in the hopes of support, regardless of whether it is monetary or not. This program is an excellent way for you to combine your writing skills with another side of you that seeks to do something good or charitable for the greater community. >>
 

Language/ Culture/ Home Stay

VIN’s language/culture/homestay volunteer program is a program fit for those who want to learn something about Nepali culture and to some degree would like to integrate into the friendly Nepali society. As a volunteer, you would be placed into a typical Nepali home in the village. During the day, you would be given language lessons. These lessons, taught by experts, would not only teach you the language, but also could teach you the cultural norms of our country. You will also be given a chance to help out at the nearest local school.This program has been known to pull volunteers out of that “visitor’s bubble” and integrate them into the place of an accepted family member of a Nepali household, an equal member of the general community. >>
 

Nepal Teacher Development

Women's Empowerment

Key activities: working with women in the field, account keeping, awareness raising, technical skills, small grant writing
This project aims to uplift the women of disadvantaged communities in Nepal by addressing various issues of education /literacy, financial well-being, health and women’s rights. You as a women empowerment volunteer within this program will be given the opportunity to either simply participate /  conduct these workshops and mutual benefit. >>
 

Working with Deaf and Disabled People

Status: OPEN FOR APPLICATION

Key activities: literacy program with the goal of teaching English reading and writing skills to deaf children in Nepal, help more deaf adults get into college and to put more deaf teachers in deaf schools
VIN’s Working with Deaf and Disabled people volunteer program aims to give the disabled people of Nepal a better shot at quality education. For too long now Nepal’s educational system has neglected the special needs of these kind of people who end up dropping out of school due to the lack of attention that has been given to them. VIN aims to provide deaf schools with volunteers like you, who may be a part of the advancing literacy program that is being established. >>
 

Yoga Teaching Volunteer

Despite its closeness, similarities and relation to India, Yoga has not been widely spread in Nepal. Often seen as a luxury in the West, Yoga is somewhat perceived far from its original form and idea. Yoga is meant to bring us to a state of awareness, where we can recognize our own divinity and keep centered and balanced, cultivating a daily positive attitude and physical health.Bringing Yoga to Nepal is an initiative to give people a chance to live a better life that comes from within, independently of the challenges and changes taking place outside of people’s own power. >>
 

Youth Empowerment
